Honeymoon in Hawaii in 2013

Are you considering visiting Hawaii in 2013 but think you can’t afford it? Look no further. Travel to Maui has the deal you have been dreaming of!

This special 7 day cruise begins on the island of Oahu. Many people enjoy a day or two in Hawaii prior or after their cruise. I personally like to do both, and the cost is very reasonable!

Your first night will be spent on the island of Oahu in Honolulu. This is located about 10 minutes from Waikiki Beach.

The next day will be on the island of Maui. You will arrive at 8am and will stay until the following evening departing at 6pm. This allows you plenty of time to rent a car and check out Lahaina, “upcountry” Maui, or take a helicopter tour of the waterfalls in Hana, and the dormant volcano of Haleakala Crater.

You will be arriving at 8am the following morning in Hilo on the “big island” of Hawaii. Hilo is a short drive to the active volcano.

Another fun thing to do is check out the waterfall at Akaka Falls. You will be departing at 6pm to arrive in Kona at 7am.

In Kona you will spend time checking out the shops on Alii Drive, or stop by the Kona Brewery for a great beer! Departure is at 6pm the same day.

The next port of call will be the island of Kauai. You will arrive at 8am and depart the following afternoon. This over night stay allows you plenty of time to visit the Waimea Canyon, the luxury resorts of Poipu or Princeville, or explore the waterfall filmed in the TV show Fantasy Island!

You will end your cruise the following day on the island of Oahu. Disembarking begins at 7am leaving you lots of time to enjoy the island. On the island of Oahu enjoy the Polynesian Cultural Center, Iolani Place, shopping in Waikiki Beach or visit Pearl Harbor.

Travel to Maui is currently holding a special rate for 7 day sailing beginning on April 20, 2013.
Prices starting at $1,400.00 person plus including taxes based on double occupancy. Airfare, pre and post hotels stays, and fuel surcharges are not included in this total.

Hana Maui

This last weekend I went to Hana for the day. If you haven’t heard about Hana it is one of the most beautiful places in the world! You won’t find anything quite like it on any of the other islands in Hawaii.

Hana, Maui is the land of rainbows, waterfalls, and lush green valleys. It is just 50 miles from the Kahului airport, but a world away!

The road to Hana is an experience to say the least! It has over 54 narrow bridges, 600 hair pin turns, and the beautiful coast line of the eastern side of Maui. This road is not for the faint of heart or someone who tends to get car sick!

The road to Hana is the experience! Often times you see folks rushing to get to the town of Hana or the 7 scared pools (Pools at Ohe’o). When you do this you miss out on so much!

Here are a few of my favorite tips when visiting Hana:

•  Leave early! By early I mean in the car ready to go by 7 or 8am. This is an all day event and you do NOT want to be one of those folks driving the whole way back in the dark!
• Fill up your car with gas before you leave the resorts. Gas is normally anywhere between 70 cents to a dollar more a gallon than anywhere else on Maui. When I was there this weekend it was $5.67 per gallon!
• Pack a cooler with snacks, water and lunch. There are a few fruit and food stands along the way or the 2 places to eat in Hana town. I ate at the Travaasa Hotel. Formerly known as the Hotel Hana Maui Resort. The food was good. Afterwards I did a tour of the hotel and checked out the suites and sea cottages. If you would like to stay in Hana this would be my first choice! They are also one of the only all inclusive options in the state of Hawaii!
• Stop often to check out the sights, but when you do make sure and pull over OFF the road so others can get by.

 While we are on the subject of driving IF you have a local behind you (they will generally be the one tail gating you) a word to the wise PULL over!  If you don’t many times they will PASS you on a curve putting you both in danger!

Here are a few of my favorite sights along the way to Hana:

1.  Stop by Paia town and have an inexpensive fish burger at Paia Fish Market, or a great fish lunch or dinner at Mama’s Fish House.
2. Check out the windsurfers at Ho’okipa Park.
3. Visit the black sands beach and cave at Wai ‘anapanapa State Park.
4. Enjoy the Bamboo Forest.
5. Pull out at the look out at Ke’anae Point.
6. Be amazed by the waterfalls at Wailua Valley.
7. Swim in the Pools of ‘Ohe’o also known as “The Seven Pools.”

All-inclusive vacation to Hawaii

As a resident of Hawaii and a travel agent I have people ask me this question all the time?

Why doesn’t Hawaii offer all inclusive vacations like Mexico?

The reason is simple. All inclusive vacations work best in places where you really want to keep the traveler from leaving the resort.

In the case of Mexico you need to be concerned about health issues from eating outside food and drinking the local water. Another worry would be the high crime towards visitors and residents.

 

Luckily for Hawaii we have the lowest crime rate in the nation, and our food and water is not only good it is GREAT!  

Often times a hotel or resort here in Hawaii will offer a meal promotion such as a free breakfast.

 As a Hawaiian Destination Specialist with the Hawaii visitor bureau and a travel agent at Travel to Maui I know that such promotions are not always the best price! I always double check with our discounts wholesalers to get the cheapest and best options for our clients!  I have found that unless you are a big breakfast eater for example you  will wind up paying more for this.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are many tours and excursions that you will want to engage in when here in Hawaii. This includes tours and excursions such as: a zip line tour, or snorkel trip to a marine preserve. These tours normally include food and drinks. If you have prepaid your meals you will feel cheated if you leave the property to enjoy one of these activities.

If you really have your heart set on an all inclusive vacation to Hawaii we do have one option. There are cruises that include all your meals, and shows. Drinks and tours are not normally included. There is one exception to this rule. We do have one cruise line that runs for 6 months of the year (when it is not in Alaska) that offers a true all inclusive cruises. Starting prices are around $3,500 per person based on double occupancy for 7 days.

What decides the price of airline tickets?

 Today is Travel Tuesday on Twitter, otherwise known as #travelTuesday.

 In this week’s blog I wanted to address the price of airline tickets. As a travel agent for Travel to Maui I get asked this question all the time.  Why are tickets so expensive this year? 

There are many things that factor in when pricing your airline ticket.

For example:

1. Dates of travel. When is high season and when is the cheap time to travel to Hawaii and Tahiti?
2. Day of the week. What days of the week are cheaper than others and why?

 

On our Travel to Maui website FAQ page http://www.traveltomaui.net/php/travel-faq.php we address these questions and more. For example when booking a trip to Hawaii to get the cheapest airline ticket Monday-Thursday will be the least expensive day to fly. Friday, Saturday and Sundays have a weekend surcharge imposed by the airlines. Saturday is always the most popular day and the most expensive day of the week to fly.

What else will make your airline ticket price jump?

• Price of fuel (as the cost of fuel goes up so does the price of your airline ticket)
• Supply and demand (holidays, or peak travel dates will make the ticket prices more expensive)
• Departure city (often times the cities with the most competition will have the best rates, but not always)
• How booked the flight is when you make your reservation? Is the lowest fares already gone? They seldom come back. Even if there was a sale if your flight is full you won’t be able to cash in on the sale!
• Are you purchasing a refundable or nonrefundable ticket? Most airline and online travel websites push the nonrefundable ticket. Here at Travel to Maui we offer a cancel waiver to cover your travel package. This policy gives you piece of mind especially when you are booking months in advance. That way you can secure the lowest prices on your airplane ticket and travel package and still be rest assured “just in case of an emergency.”
